đ€©Â WordCamp Brighton 2018 is looking for people to speak this summer. Perhaps that could be you?
đ Last year at WordCamp Brighton we had 18 speakers give talks and workshops to our 195 attendees.
đ€Â We had topics about business, development, accessibility, anxiety and wrestling! There was a lot of fun and a lot of learning.
đââïžÂ We had a blind selection process in the open and are proud that achieved an equal gender split with our speakers (45% – 55%). We’re doing it again this year!
đ€Â We had first-timers and hardened veterans! We provide mentoring and help for any speakers who want it. Our WordCamp is a fantastic spring-board for anyone who wants to start talking.

WordCamp Brighton attendees have a wide range of WordPress experience and all sorts of different skills and interests. So we’re also looking for a diverse range of talks and workshops. We’re also looking for anyone interested in being on a panel, so please submit that option if it interests you.
We ask that you limit your submissions to a maximum of 3 – thanks!
It’d be excellent to have talks related to the following areas of WordPress â but we’re open to other ideas too:

- Front-end development

- WordPress for beginners
We’re welcoming applications from people in Brighton, across the UK and all over the world. Please note, WordCamp Brighton is not able to cover any travel or accommodation expenses.
Presenting a talk at WordCamp is a fantastic experience. We’ll be here to support speakers with advice and encouragement in the lead up to their talk.
Free tickets for speakers
If your talk is accepted, you’ll get a free ticket to WordCamp Brighton 2018!
We’re releasing another batch of tickets after we announce speakers, so don’t worry about tickets running out.
All speakers also get an invite to our complimentary volunteers dinner. This is a chance to relax before WordCamp starts, and meet fellow speakers, volunteers and organisers.
Talk format
WordCamp Brighton talks will take place on Friday 17th and Saturday 18th August 2018.
There’ll be a mix of long form talks and shorter ‘lightning’ talks, with optional time for questions.
- Long form talks will be approximately 30 minutes plus an optional 10 minutes for questions.
- Lightning talks will be approximately 10 minutes plus an optional 5 minutes for questions.
What do I need to prepare?
Other than coming up with a talk title and outline, you won’t need to prepare anything yet.
We’ll aim to let everyone know within one week of the application close date whether their talk has been chosen.
If your talk is selected, we’ll ask for a set of slides and talk notes in advance of WordCamp Brighton. If you’d like help preparing and practicing your talk, we’ll have mentors on hand.
Being inclusive matters
We truly want to create an event that anyone with an interest in WordPress would be excited to attend. So being inclusive is very important to us.
Some of the ways we’re making the event more inclusive are:
- All venues are wheelchair accessible
- Providing a room for parents and their children to relax and have time away from the conference
- Providing a room for speakers to relax and have time away from the conference
- All identifying information is removed before selecting talks
- Offering mentor support to all speakers
- We’re organising as much of this event as possible in the open. You’re welcome to join in (or observe) on Slack, in the channel #wordcamp-brighton
